The Role of AI in Mental Health: Advancing Health Equity

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly embedded in everyday life, supporting administrative tasks, healthcare navigation, and customer service. Beyond these functional roles, AI is now emerging as a source of emotional and mental health support, raising important social, psychological, and ethical questions. This study examines the growing reliance on AI-based companionship and therapeutic tools, particularly in the context of widespread loneliness, barriers to mental healthcare access, and shifting norms around digital interaction. Using a qualitative research design, the study employs online ethnography and thematic analysis of publicly available discussions on platforms such as Reddit, Mental Health Forum, and Facebook groups. Findings reveal two dominant themes: AI as a tool for emotional support and daily coping, and user comparisons between AI-based support and traditional therapy. Participants frequently described AI as accessible, nonjudgmental, and emotionally safe, offering immediate support during moments of distress. However, users also acknowledged limitations, emphasizing that AI cannot replace human connection, clinical judgment, or ethical accountability. The study situates these findings within broader concerns about health equity, data privacy, and the absence of regulatory oversight for many AI mental health tools. Overall, the research suggests that AI is most effective as a supplemental resource within a hybrid model of care, enhancing access and self-reflection while remaining grounded in human-led mental health services.
